Kangaroo Industries Association of Australia president Ray Borda talks to Radio 6PR Perth, Radio 2GB Sydney and 4BC Brisbane about how the commercial kangaroo industry has one of the strictest animal consumption policies in the industry.

Key points:

  • The commercial industry is accountable with a traceable harvest that ensures the highest animal welfare and food safety standards are upheld at each step of the process.
  • Australia is a vast country, home to more than 40 million kangaroos. Of this number, around 4% of only a few abundant and protected species are harvested by the commercial industry every year under intense scrutiny and regulation.
  • Purchasing kangaroo products should be an ethical choice for socially concerned consumers as kangaroos graze on the natural pastures and foliage of the Australian bush.
  • Kangaroo meat is not farmed – it’s free-range, and it’s estimated that it has one-third the carbon footprint of beef.
  • The commercial industry employs more than 3,000 people across Australia, predominantly from rural and remote areas, and supports local farmers.
