We help conserve Australia's unique biodiversity
The commercial industry recognises its part in helping conserve Australia’s natural ecosystem.
Without a commercial harvest, kangaroos would still be kept at sustainable levels through conservation culling and non-commercial harvests, which could result in poorer animal welfare outcomes.
Commercial harvesting is widely considered the responsible alternative to keeping populations at sustainable levels, because:
* animals remain in their natural habitat;
* the meat and skins, that would otherwise be discarded, are turned into valuable products;
* it creates thousands of jobs, including for Indigenous Australians; and
* the industry can be tightly regulated and monitored.

We make a valuable contribution to the Australian economy
The gross value of production for the commercial kangaroo industry is around A$200 million. This includes ancillary benefits such as reduced agricultural damage, reduced road accidents and broader benefits to the community. The commercial industry also employs more than 3,000 people across the country, predominantly from rural and remote areas, and supports local farmers.
Kangaroo products are better for the environment
It is widely considered in the scientific community that kangaroos are a smart, environmentally friendly source of meat and leather due to their unique biology. Unlike cattle and sheep, kangaroos emit little methane, which is 21 times worse than carbon dioxide as a global warming gas.
Natural leather is also a more sustainable material than artifical leathers because it lasts longer, can be recycled and prevents skins ending up in landfill. Modern tanning techniques mean the manufacturing process is much cleaner, matching or exceeding that of artifical materials.
